Background of the Study

Oncology nursing is a specialized and emotionally demanding field that requires high levels of skill, knowledge, and emotional resilience. The quality of care provided to oncology patients is influenced not only by technical expertise but also by the satisfaction and well-being of the nurses delivering care (Li et al., 2023). Job satisfaction is a significant factor in determining the quality of healthcare services, including patient outcomes. Nurses who are satisfied with their roles are more likely to be engaged, deliver higher-quality care, and experience lower levels of burnout (Liu et al., 2022).

At University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Cross River State, oncology nurses play a critical role in providing comprehensive care to cancer patients. However, job dissatisfaction among healthcare workers, including nurses, has been linked to lower job performance, decreased patient satisfaction, and negative patient outcomes (Liu et al., 2022). This study seeks to investigate the relationship between oncology nurses' job satisfaction and the quality of care they provide to cancer patients at UCTH.

Statement of the Problem

While there is substantial evidence that job satisfaction is crucial for healthcare workers' performance, there is limited research focusing on how it specifically impacts oncology nurses' ability to provide high-quality care. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the relationship between job satisfaction and patient care quality in oncology nursing at UCTH.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of job satisfaction among oncology nurses at University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

2. To evaluate the quality of care provided by oncology nurses at University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

3. To investigate the relationship between oncology nurses' job satisfaction and the quality of patient care provided.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of job satisfaction among oncology nurses at University of Calabar Teaching Hospital?

2. How would you assess the quality of care provided by oncology nurses at University of Calabar Teaching Hospital?

3. Is there a relationship between oncology nurses' job satisfaction and the quality of patient care they provide?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant positive relationship between oncology nurses' job satisfaction and the quality of patient care at University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

2. Higher job satisfaction among oncology nurses correlates with better patient outcomes in oncology care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on oncology nurses working at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. The limitation of the study includes the subjective nature of job satisfaction assessments and the potential variability in how nurses perceive the quality of care they provide.

Definitions of Terms

• Job Satisfaction: The level of contentment that nurses feel with their roles, which can impact their job performance, motivation, and patient care.
